How to become an insurance agent

To become a Life and/or Health Agent in Louisiana, you will need to do the following:

Pass your pre-licensing course

Louisiana does not require a pre-licensing course, so you can take as much time as you need. Pre-licensing education is valid for one year from the date of completion.

Complete your license application

After passing the exam, apply for your license by completing an application at http://www.nipr.com.

Schedule your state exam

Before scheduling your exam, we recommend that you read the Candidate Handbook for important details. Licensing exams are provided by PSI and costs $30 for Life exams or Health & Accident exams, and $53 for Life, Health & Accident exams.

To schedule by phone, call (855) 579-4644.

Get your fingerprints done

You must be electronically fingerprinted at one of the PSI Louisiana sites, during regular testing hours, on the day of your examination. The prints will be forwarded electronically to the appropriate review agencies. You will pay the fingerprinting fee of $39.25 at the test site on the day of testing. The fingerprinting fee is payable to “PSI” by money order, cashier’s check, company check, VISA or MasterCard. Please note: this process may take up to 4 weeks and ink cards are not accepted.

Questions we get
asked a lot...

Our courses are text courses, entirely online with short videos embedded in the course, and are backed up by live webcasts and support from instructors. All courses are supported by a video library and practice tests. The complete video library is up to 12.5 hours of video content depending on the course, and the practice tests are built from a test bank of over 1200 practice test questions.
Each state makes all of those decisions and does not allow us to advise you in that department.  Generally speaking, once your state has your application and fingerprints, if they see anything in your background they usually want some kind of paperwork, just as proof of adjudication or other pertinent documentation.  Whether or not you will be allowed to get the insurance license is entirely up to them, and they will not consider it until they have your state application and fingerprints.  You can select your state from the dropdown menu to get the contact information to your state if you have questions about your background check.

You will need a valid photo ID to get fingerprinted and take the state exam, but it does not have to be a driver license. Select your state in the dropdown below to see your state’s testing requirements.

Yes, you have to be a resident of your state to be issued an insurance license.
