How to become an insurance agent

To become a Life and/or Health Agent in Alabama, you will need to do the following:

Pass your pre-licensing course

We have all the tools you need to get through your online pre-licensing course and pass your state exam the first time. When you satisfy the requirements for your course, you will receive a Certificate of Completion. Pre-licensing education is valid for one year from the date of completion; you will need to take and pass your state exam within this timeframe.

Schedule your state exam

Licensing exams are provided by the University of Alabama. An exam fee must be paid at the time of reservation by credit card or debit card. All reservations need to be made at least seven days (five business days) before the desired exam date. You can make an exam reservation through the following methods:

Online: Make an online reservation at http://training.ua.edu/insurance-testing/

Phone: (205) 348-3000

Get your fingerprints done

All individual resident applicants seeking to become licensed as Producers, Adjusters, or Title Agents must have completed a Fingerprint background check. You should seek to get fingerprinted after passing the state exam and one day before applying for the license.

Fingerprints completed for any reason outside of pursuing an insurance license from the Alabama Department of Insurance will not be accepted. Fingerprints will remain in the DOI system only 30 days after you are fingerprinted. If the application reaches the DOI after those 30 days you will have to get fingerprinted again and pay the required fee again.

For more information on fingerprinting requirements, visit https://fieldprintalabama.com/individuals.

Complete your license application

After passing the exam, apply for your license by completing an application at http://www.nipr.com. After 5 days, check http://aldoi.gov, and go to the License Search under Producers/Agents to confirm issuance of your license. Once license is issued, you may print your license from the home page.

Course Requirements

Individuals must complete a pre-licensing course of study for the lines of authority desired before taking any examination. Applicants are required to pass a final exam of the pre-licensing course with a 70% or higher to receive a certificate of completion and be eligible to take the state exam.  The pre-licensing course must consist of 20 classroom hours per line of authority, or equivalent individual instruction, on the general principles of insurance for that line of authority. The lines of authority requiring a pre-licensing course are as follows:

  • Life – 20 hour course on Life Insurance or 40 hour course on Life & Health Insurance
  • Accident & Health or Sickness (Disability) – 20 hour course on Health Insurance or 40 hour course on Life & Health Insurance
  • Combined Life / Accident & Health or Sickness (Disability) – 40 hour course on Life & Health Insurance
  • Variable Life and Variable Annuity Products line of authority – exempt from both prelicensing course and examination; however, must already hold and maintain “Life” line of authority, must have already passed securities examinations “Series 6” or “Series 7” and “Series 63” or “Series 66” and must be licensed with a registered Broker Dealer in accordance with the rules of the Alabama Securities Commission. During the application process, an applicant will be required to provide the CRD number to verify the exams passed.

Prelicensing education courses are taken in a classroom setting or online during which a minimum of five hours must be dedicated to the discussion of Alabama Law. Instructors must be knowledgeable of the insurance industry and all aspects of the insurance law.

Once the prelicensing course is completed and a certificate is awarded, the insurance licensing examination can be taken within one year from the date of the certificate.

Questions we get
asked a lot...

Our courses are text courses, entirely online with short videos embedded in the course, and are backed up by live webcasts and support from instructors. All courses are supported by a video library and practice tests. The complete video library is up to 12.5 hours of video content depending on the course, and the practice tests are built from a test bank of over 1200 practice test questions.
Each state makes all of those decisions and does not allow us to advise you in that department.  Generally speaking, once your state has your application and fingerprints, if they see anything in your background they usually want some kind of paperwork, just as proof of adjudication or other pertinent documentation.  Whether or not you will be allowed to get the insurance license is entirely up to them, and they will not consider it until they have your state application and fingerprints.  You can select your state from the dropdown menu to get the contact information to your state if you have questions about your background check.

You will need a valid photo ID to get fingerprinted and take the state exam, but it does not have to be a driver license. Select your state in the dropdown below to see your state’s testing requirements.

Yes, you have to be a resident of your state to be issued an insurance license.
