The Basics

Required Continuing Education Hours

Life and Health Producers
  • 24 CE hours, including 3 hours of ethics, are required by the last day of your birth month every 2 year license term. 
  • See license term below.  Producers planning to sell the following product(s) have special training or education requirements as described below:
Property and Casualty Producers

24 CE hours, including 3 hours of ethics, are required by the last day of your birth month every 2 year license term. See license term below.

Flood Insurance

Before selling flood insurance, licensees must complete a one-time 3-hour training class on flood insurance and the National Flood Insurance Program. New licensees must comply with flood training before their first CE compliance date.

Nonresident CE Requirements

If the producer has not taken a NAIC LTC training course in another state, the nonresident producer selling LTC must comply with the Ohio LTC training requirements:

Annuity Best Interest Training

Agents holding a Life or Variable Annuity line of authority who plan to sell, solicit or negotiate annuity products must complete a one-time 4-hour course related to annuity. Annuity course credits count towards the agent’s 24-hour CE requirement. Ohio-approved Annuity training courses are approved under the “Annuity Best Interest” 4 hour course category type.

The Annuity Best Interest 4 hour training course must be completed prior to selling, soliciting, or negotiating any annuity product. red

Long-Term Care (LTC) Insurance

  • Long-Term Care (LTC) Insurance
    • Initial 8-hour LTC training requirement: Before selling, soliciting, or negotiating LTC insurance products in Ohio, producers must complete an initial 8-hour, state-approved LTC training course.
    • Ongoing 4-hour LTC training requirement: After completing the 8-hour initial training requirement, producers must complete 4 hours of state-approved LTC training every 24-month compliance period following completion of the initial LTC training.

License Term

The license term is every 2 years, based on the last day of the producer’s birth month. 

CE Subject Requirements

Category restrictions

Life/Health and Property/Casualty producers can complete 21 CE hours in any line of authority and 3 hours in approved ethics.

Course presentation

Producers can take courses through online and paper-based self-study.

Study requirements

Students must read the course material and answer all practice questions prior to taking the final exam.

Final Exam Requirements

Exam proctor requirements

Self-study final exams are Closed book. Students will be locked out of the course material once the exam is launched.

Exam rules

The final exam must be passed with a score of 70 percent or higher to receive credit. If the final exam is not passed on the first attempt, students have an unlimited number of retakes.

CE Carryover Allowance

No excess CE credit hours may be carried over to the next 2-year license term.

Course Repetition Rules

Courses may not be taken for credit more than once in a 2-year license term.

Certificate of Completion

American Online Insurance School provides online, printable certificates of completion in Ohio. Certificates of completion are available to print online immediately after the final exam is passed. The licensee must keep a copy of each certificate of completion in his or her files for 3 years.

CE Completion Reporting

American Online Insurance School reports course completions electronically to the Ohio Department of Insurance every business day.

*Agents must have their CE credit hours posted prior to their expiration date and prior to applying to renew their insurance license(s). Providers have 15 days to report your CE completions, so please plan accordingly to avoid a lapse in licensure.

CE Exemptions

The following licensees are exempt from continuing education requirements:

  • Persons holding a limited authority license
  • Nonresident licensees in compliance with CE requirements for their home states
  • Nonresident licensees who completed a NAIC LTC training course in another state are exempt from taking the special training requirement in Ohio
  • Persons granted inactive license status by the State Director of Insurance
