The Basics

Required Continuing Education Hours

Life and Health producers are required to complete 24 CE hours, including 3 hour of ethics, are required every 2 years.

The 3 hours of Ethics must be completed in a classroom or “classroom equivalent” course.

Property and Casualty producers are required to complete 24 CE hours, including 3 hour of ethics, are required every 2 year license term.

Annuity Best Interest Training: Hours: 4

Frequency: One-time training must be complete prior to selling annuity products.

Effective October 1st, 2022, licensees who sell annuity products will need to complete an annuity course covering the NAIC Best Interest Standards. Licensees who have already completed a 4-hour annuity course prior to 10/1/2022 may complete a 1-hour annuity best interest course or complete the new 4-hour annuity best interest course. Licensees will only have until 3/31/2023 to be able to take the 1-hour course.

Licensees who have not completed an annuity course must take the 4-hour annuity best interests course prior to selling annuities. Residents and non-residents who have completed this training in another state with laws similar to New Mexico’s law will be compliant with the requirement.

Long-Term Care

Initial Training
Hours: 8
Frequency: One-time training must be complete prior to selling LTC products.

Ongoing Training
Hours: 4
Frequency: Ongoing training must be completed every 24-month period, following the initial training requirement.

Residents and non-residents who satisfy the training requirements of another state with laws similar to New Mexico’s law will be compliant with the requirement.

License Term

The license term ends on the last day of the producer’s birth month, every 2 years. Even birth years renew every even year. Odd birth years renew every odd year..

Non-resident CE Requirements

Non-resident licensees that do not complete CE in their home state must complete New Mexico’s CE requirements.

CE Subject Requirements

Producers must complete 3 hours in a classroom or in a classroom equivalent course. All other hours may be completed by taking courses approved only for the line of authority licensed for.

Final Exam Requirements

Self-study final exams DO NOT require a monitor. Self-study final exams are open book. Producers may refer to the course material as often as needed. The final exam must be passed with a score of 70 percent or higher to receive credit. If the final exam is not passed on the first attempt, students have an unlimited number of retakes.

CE Carryover Allowance

No excess CE credit hours may be carried over to the next license term.

No excess CE credit hours may be carried over to the next license term.

Certificate of Completion

AOIS provides online, printable certificates of completion in New Mexico. Certificates of completion will be available immediately after the final exam is passed. Producers must keep a copy of each certificate of completion in his or her files for 3 years.

CE Completion Reporting

AOIS reports course completions every business day.

License Renewal Process

Producers must keep a copy of each certificate of completion in his or her files for 3 years. A copy of your certificate will be kept conveniently for you in your classroom at www.aoischool.com

CE Exemptions

Producers are exempt from continuing education if one of the following is true:

  • The producer holds a limited license.

  • The producer has been an agent, solicitor, nonresident agent, or nonresident broker for 25 years or more.

  • The producer maintains a license solely for the purposes of receiving renewal fee residuals and does not otherwise transact the business of insurance.

  • The producer is an agent of a fraternal benefit society.

  • The nonresident producer has met the CE requirements of his or her home state.
