Louisiana Continuing Education Requirements

The Basics

All licensees are required to complete 24 hours of continuing education every 2-year term, including 3 hours of ethics.

Life and Health Producers

Annuity Training

Before selling, soliciting, or negotiating annuity products in Louisiana, producers must complete a one-time annuity training course approved for at least 4 hours.

Long-Term Care/Long-Term Care Partnership (LTCP)

Initial 8-hour LTC training requirement: Before selling, soliciting, or negotiating LTC/LTCP insurance products, a producermust complete an initial 8-hour state-approved LTC/LTCP training course.
*If you have previously completed this requirement in another state you will be considered compliant with the Louisiana requirement.

Ongoing 4-hour LTC training requirement: After completing the initial training, resident producers must complete a 4-hour ongoing training course within two years of the initial training.


Property and Casualty Producers

Flood Insurance Training

All Louisiana property and casualty licensees must complete a one-time 3-hour course approved for flood training.

Life/Health and Property/Casualty Dual Licensees

Agents selling annuities, long-term care and flood products are required to meet the requirements mentioned above.

Claims Adjusters and Public Adjusters

Both Claims Adjusters and Public Adjusters are required to complete 24 hours of continuing education every 2-year license period including 3 hours of ethics.

Nonresident CE Requirements

Nonresident producers must meet the CE requirements of their home states. The Letter of Certification submitted with the renewal application must indicate that they have complied with the CE requirements in their resident states.

Nonresident adjusters must meet the CE requirement of their home state or of another state where they are licensed. If the adjuster is not meeting any other state’s requirement or if the adjuster qualified for a Louisiana license by taking the Louisiana license exam, then the adjuster must comply with the Louisiana CE requirement.

Special Training/Education Requirements

License Term

  • Life, Health, & Accident Producers will renew the last day of their birth month in even numbered years.

  • Property & Casualty Producers will renew the last day of their birth month inodd numbered years.

  • Combined Life, Health, & Accident and Property & Casualty Producers will renew the last day of their birth month in odd numbered years. 

  • Adjusters will renew the last day of their birth month in odd numbered years.

CE Subject Requirements

  • Category restrictions: Courses must be for insurance line.

  • Course presentation: Online and correspondence self-study.

  • Study requirements: Students should read the course material prior to taking the final exam.

Final Exam Requirements
  • Exam proctor: Non-monitored exam.

  • Exam rules: The final exam is open book and must be passed with a grade of 70 percent or higher. Students have unlimited retakes.

CE Carryover Allowance

Life and Health Producers and Property and Casualty Producers may carry over a maximum of 10 excess credit hours to the next renewal period. Thereis no carryoverallowancefor Adjusters.

Course Repetition Rules

A course may not be taken for credit more than once within the 2-year renewal period.

Certificate of Completion

American Online Insurance School provides online, printable certificates of completion in Louisiana. Certificates of completions will be available to print online immediately after a final exam is passed. Producers must retain original certificate of completions in their files for the most recent 2-year renewal period.

CE Completion Reporting

We report course completions to the Louisiana Department of Insurance every business day.

License Renewal Process

Louisiana Department of Insurance (LDI) now offers an electronic online renewal system. Individual licensees as well as agencies for both producers and adjusters can now renew at the LDI website. Click here to renew online.

To renew by mail the licensee submits copies of the certificates of completion along with a signed CE statement to the Louisiana Department of Insurance at license renewal. This form is available from the Louisiana Department of Insurance.

CE Exemptions

The following individuals are exempt from CE requirements:

  • Newly licensed agents who have completed an approved pre-licensing education course (exempt for the first reporting period)

  • Individuals with a limited line license for which an exam is not required

  • Individuals licensed for industrial fire insurance only

  • Individuals holding a limited license for one of the following lines:fidelity and surety, baggage, credit property, service or burial, travel health and accident, and industrial life, health and accident

  • A licensed producer or adjuster, who is prevented from meeting the CE requirements for renewal due to military service,or due to a medical condition or injury, may request a waiver of those requirements and renewal of the license. The licensee must contact the state to submit this request.
  • Members of the legislature while serving a term in the legislature.

  • Nonresident agents are exempt if licensee meets their home state CE requirement

  • Nonresident adjusters are exempt if licensee meets their home state CE requirement or that of another state in which they are licensed.
