Iowa Continuing Education Requirements

The Basics

All Life/Health and Property/Casualty producers are required to complete:

  • 36 CE hours, including 3 hours of ethics, are required every 3 year license term.  
  • Crop Insurance producers are required to complete 18 CE hours, including 3 hours of ethics, are required every 3 year license term.
  • Public Adjusters : 24 CE hours total, including:

    • Ethics: 2 CE hours

Life and Health Producers​

Life and Health producers are able to complete all continuing education online.
Annuity Training Requirement – Best Interest
Annuity Best Interest Training Hours: 4 Frequency: One-time training of a 4-Hour Annuity Suitability and Best Interest Standards course must be complete prior to selling annuity products. Residents and non-residents who have completed training including the NAIC Best Interest Standards in another state with laws similar to Iowa law will be deemed compliant with this requirement. This requirement is separate from the current requirement for Indexed Insurance.
Indexed Insurance
All producers selling indexed life products must complete a one-time 4 credit-hour training course.
Long-Term Care (LTC) Insurance
Initial 8-hour LTC training requirement: A one-time training course of at least 8 CE credits in subjects related to long-term care insurance must be completed prior to selling any long-term care insurance. This training course is required to be in a classroom setting. Ongoing 4-hour LTC training requirement: Following the initial training, producers continuing to sell LTC insurance must complete ongoing training of 4 CE credits in subjects related to long-term care insurance every three-year CE term afterward.

Property/Casualty and Crop Producers

Property and Casualty producers are able to complete 36 hours through self-study. 

Flood Insurance

Resident insurance producers who sell federal flood insurance policies must complete a one-time 3-hour course approved for the National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP).

Crop Insurance Producers

Crop Insurance producers are required to complete 18 CE hours, including 3 hours of ethics, are required every 3 year license term. 

Roster Fees

A roster fee of $1.00 per CE hour is required to process course completion hours in Iowa and will be added to the order upon checkout.

Nonresident CE Requirements

If a nonresident producer’s home state does not have a CE requirement, the producer must comply with the Iowa CE requirement.

Annuity Training Requirement

Before selling, soliciting, or negotiating annuity products in Iowa, prodcuers must complete a one-time annuity training course approved for at least 4 hours. This requirement is separate from the current requirement for Indexed Insurance.

Indexed Insurance

All nonresident producers who wish to sell fixed index life products must complete an approved 4-hour training course.

Long-Term Care (LTC) Insurance

Nonresident producers who have completed an 8-hour NAIC LTCP course approved for use in any other licensed state have met the Iowa LTC training requirement. Nonresident producers that have not taken an approved LTCP course in another state must meet the training requirement by completing an Iowa approved course.

License Term

The license term is the last day of the licensee’s birth month every 3 years.  Licensees may track credits and verify expiration date at SBS Connect. Click here to access. There is no fee, but you must register to use this free service.

CE Subject Requirements

Course presentation:  Self study online or correspondence.

Study requirements:  Students should read course material prior to completing final exam.

Final Exam Requirements

Exam proctor requirements:  Self-study final exams must be monitored by a disinterested third party; 

Exam rules:  The final exam must be passed with a grade of 70 percent or higher to receive credit. Exams are closed book. Students have unlimited retakes.

CE Carryover Allowance

Excess CE hours may not be carried over to the next renewal.

Course Repetition Rules

A course may not be taken for credit more than once within a 3 year licensing term.

Certificate of Completion

AOIS provides online, printable certificates of completion in Iowa. Certificate of completion will be available to print online immediately after a final exam is passed. Producers must retain a copy of each certificate of completion in their files for 4 years.

CE Completion Reporting

Same-day Reporting – AOIS reports course completions every business day.

License Renewal Process

A renewal notice will be sent via email (if available) by the state 60 days prior to the producer’s expiration date. The notice will state whether the CE requirement has been met and state the renewal fee.

A producer is required to renew his or her license in a timely manner, regardless of whether a notice is received from the Insurance Division. *It is recommended that CE be completed at least 1 month in advance of license renewal. Click here to check your license status.

CE Exemptions

The following individuals are exempt from CE requirements:

  • A producer who is an attorney licensed to sell insurance. The producer/attorney must file a report showing proof of compliance with the continuing legal education requirement for the attorney’s home state and pay the CE fee and the renewal fee.

  • Attorneys who do not have a CE requirement in their home states must comply with the Iowa insurance CE requirements.

  • A producer who is on extended active duty with the U.S. Armed Forces.

  • A nonresident producer who lives in a state where CE is required. These producers must file the renewal notice through the NIPR gateway. For details visit

  • A producer who is licensed for creditor surety. The producer must file the renewal report and pay the renewal fee.
