Alabama Continuing Education Requirements

Our Continuing Education provider number for the state of Alabama is 23302140.

The Basics

Alabama agents are required to complete 24 hours of continuing education every 2 year license term to maintain their license, which must include 3 hours of ethics. The license term ends on the last day of the producer’s birth month, every 2 years. Even birth years renew every even year, and odd birth years renew every odd year. There are additional requirements that must be met to sell long-term care, annuity or flood policies.

Licensees must take courses in license type held. If multi-licensed, any course is allowed.

Life and Health Producers

Life and Health Producers are required to complete 24 hours of continuing education every 2 year license term to maintain their license, which must include 3 hours of ethics.

Long-Term Care

We have all the LTC training you need to stay compliant.

Initial 8-hour training requirement

Before selling LTC policies in Alabama, producers must complete an 8-hour state approved Long-Term Care Partnership training.  This requirement is included in the 24 total hours of continuing education.

Ongoing 4-hour training requirement

After completing the initial 8-hour training, producers continuing to sell LTC must complete a 4-hour ongoing training every two calendar years.  This is also included in the 24-hour requirement.

Property and Casualty Producers

Flood

Resident licensed property and casualty producers who sell federal flood insurance policies are required to complete a one-time, 3-hour flood insurance course.  This is included in the 24-hour continuing education requirement and must be completed before selling federal flood insurance policies.

Continuing Education

License Term

The last day of the licensee’s birth month, every 2 years, based on odd/even birth year.

CE Subject Requirements

  • Category restrictions: there are no category restrictions in this state. Producers and Service Representatives may take any course approved for CE credit in Alabama.  Adjusters and Title agents may take any course approved for P&C credit in Alabama.
  • Course presentation: online and paper self-study
  • Study requirements: students should read the course material prior to taking a closed-book, proctored final exam.

Final Exam Requirements

CE Carryover Allowance

No CE carryover hours in excess of the required 24 or 12 total hours will be allowed.

Course Repetition Rules

Courses may not be taken for credit more than once in a 2-year compliance period. In order to obtain CE and avoid course duplication, begin the first day after the renewal birth month and end the last day of the month, in the birth month at 2 year renewal.

CE Completion Reporting

Same-Day Reporting: American Online Insurance School reports course completions electronically every business day.

Certificate of Completion

American Online Insurance School provides online, printable certificates in Alabama. Certificates of completion are available to print online immediately after the final exam is passed. Because American Online Insurance School reports CE credits, certificates should not be sent to the Alabama Insurance Department unless required for auditing purposes. Producers are required to maintain the original certificate of completion in his or her files.

License Renewal Process

Resident and nonresident licensees can renew their licenses online here.

Producer licenses may be renewed as early as two months before the licensee’s birth month, and within a grace period of 30 days after the last day of their birth month with a late fee of $50 added to the regular renewal fee. If not renewed before the end of the grace period, the license will be expired.

Adjusters are allowed to renew their license online between October 1st and December 31st with a renewal fee of $80. If your license is not renewed before January 1st, the license will be expired.

CE Exemptions

The following are exempt from Alabama CE requirements:

    • Individuals licensed for less than 12 months at the time of their first renewal
    • Nonresident producers and adjusters in good standing with their home states
    • Producers licensed only for lines of insurance for which an examination is not required
    • Producers licensed in Alabama for 15 years and who are at least 60 years of age. Effective January 1, 2013 this exemption will no longer be given.  Only those who were quailifed before this date may continue the exemption and will be grandfathered in.  They may continue to request exemption unless the license goes inactive for over a year, in which case this exemption will no longer apply.
    • Temporary license holders pending passage of the written examination for that line of insurance
    • Active members of the Alabama legislature during any portion of the compliance period
