The Basics

Life and Health Producers

24 CE hours, including 3 hours of ethics, are required every 2 year license term. Producers planning to sell Annuities or Long Term Care have special requirements (see below)

Property and Casualty Producers

24 CE hours, including 3 hours of ethics, are required every 2 year license term. 

Flood Insurance

Resident producers who sell federal flood insurance policies must complete a one-time 3-hour course approved for the National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP).

Public Adjusters

24 CE hours, including 3 hours of ethics, are required every 2 year license term. 

Multi-Peril Crop Adjusters

24 CE hours, including 3 hours of ethics, are required every 2 year license term. 

Combination Multi-Peril Crop Adjuster and Life and Health or Property and Casualty Producers

48 CE hours, including 4 hours of ethics, are required every 2 year license term. 

Annuities

An insurance producer who engages in the sale of annuity products shall complete a one time four (4) credit hour training course approved by the department.

Long-Term Care (LTC)

  • Initial 8-hour training requirement: Before selling, soliciting or negotiating LTC insurance products in Tennessee, producers must complete an initial 8-hour training course.
  • Ongoing 4-hour training requirement: After meeting the initial training requirement, producers must complete 4 hours of state-approved LTC training in every 24-month period following the initial training.

Roster Fees

A roster fee per CE hour is required to process course completion hours in Tennessee and will be added to the order upon checkout.

Nonresident CE Requirements

Nonresident producers planning to sell Long-Term Care (LTC) have special training or education requirements as described below:

  • Initial 8-hour training requirement: Before selling, soliciting or negotiating LTC insurance products in Tennessee, producers must complete an initial 8-hour training course.

  • Ongoing 4-hour training requirement: After meeting the initial training requirement, producers must complete 4 hours of state-approved LTC training in every 24-month period following the initial training.

Nonresident producers who have completed a Long-term care training requirement for another state will satisfy the training requirements for Tennessee.

License Term

The license term is the last day of the licensee’s birth month every 2 years. Licensees who were born in an even-numbered year will be required to complete their CE in even-numbered years. Licensees who were born in an odd-numbered year will be required to complete their CE in odd-numbered years.

CE Subject Requirements

Category Restrictions

Of the 24-hour CE requirement, 3 hours must be in ethics. Any Tennessee-approved insurance CE course counts toward the 24-hour requirement. Courses can be completed in any license type for credit.

Exam Proctor Requirements

Non Monitored Exam – Open Book Exams. You may refer to the Course Material as often as you need to complete the exam.

Exam Rules

Self-study final exams are open book. Students may refer to the course material as often as needed. The final exam must be passed with a score of 70 percent or higher to receive credit. Students have unlimited retakes.

CE Carryover Allowance

Producers may carry over a maximum of 12 excess credit hours to the next license term. However, this carryover allowance does not apply to ethics CE credit requirements. Excess ethics hours will be counted as general credit. Any course hours carried over to the next renewal will be counted as duplicate if the same course is taken again.

Course Repetition Rules

A course may not be taken for credit more than once within 2 calendar years from the previous completion date.

Certificate of Completion

AOIS provides online, printable certificates of completion in Tennessee. Certificates of completion will be available to print online immediately after a final exam is passed. Producers must keep the original certificates of completion in their files for 2 years.

License Renewal Process

Producers whose licenses are current and who are within their license term may renew their licenses online: CLICK HERE

Your renewal application will be fully posted into the Department’s licensing system within 2 business days. Your license will be sent to you by the state as soon as your renewal application has been fully processed.

CE Exemptions

The following are exempt from CE requirements:

  • Limited Lines producers

  • Public adjusters licensed less than 1 full year

  • An insurance producer who has been continuously licensed since January 1, 1994.

  • Nonresident public adjusters who have met the CE requirements in their home state, which MUST reciprocate with TN, are not required to complete CE requirements for Tennessee.
